Ingo Maurer first made BiBiBiBi in 1982 as a wedding present for friends. Its red legs came from a plastic stork he spotted at Woolworths: the birds were sold out, and only a pair of legs without a body was left. Released at first as a limited, numbered series, the playful lamp soon joined the permanent collection and has stayed in it for more than 30 years.
A black adjustable reflector on a curved rod, topped with a feather, directs light onto a white porcelain plate, which bounces it back as a soft, glare-free glow. The plate also works as a small shelf for keys, rings and other little things worth keeping close. BiBiBiBi was designed for a frosted bulb.
